What are you doing the weekend before Thanksgiving – shopping? Eating? Seeing a movie? We think those ideas are just fine and dandy, but what if we told you about the magical combination of a holiday parade, a decked out battleship and a fierce battle for hot cocoa supremacy all happening that very same weekend?
It’s true. On Saturday, Nov. 23, Downtown Norfolk welcomes thousands of visitors to its 38th Annual Grand Illumination Parade, which sees massive, inflatable gingerbread men, mermaids and even jolly old Saint Nick traipsing up and down its magically-lit streets as families and children look on in starry-eyed wonder. This tradition has captivated Mermaid City locals and visitors for nearly four decades and this year promises just as much fun with the theme of “Retro Wonderland.” Will that mean throwback decor and vintage costumes? Perhaps! The best way to find out is to show up at 7 p.m. anywhere along the two-mile route.
The parade runs for about an hour and, starting at 7, you’ll be able to check out the downtown skyline being lit up in sync with the parade. It’s quite a sight to see. A variety of vendors will be on hand selling food and drinks, and many of Downtown Norfolk’s restaurants will be open for business, as well.
Note: the route’s viewing areas are all ADA accessible. Just look for volunteers in bright green safety vests for assistance or questions.
Other Downtown Holiday Attractions

After the parade, check out the holiday decor on the Battleship Wisconsin during WinterFest and its holiday movie theme. A towering 35-foot-tall leg lamp, a larger-than-life Ralphie (complete with his pink bunny suit), two Grinch “takeover” nights, and an elaborate new train display featuring everyone’s favorite elf are just some of the additions that make this season’s WinterFest bigger and brighter than ever! Other new WinterFest additions include a team of elves recreating classic holiday movie scenes, nightly magic performances, juggling, an amazing aerialist show and never-before-seen spaces aboard the Battleship Wisconsin. Back by popular demand, WinterFest will feature its magical Mistletoe Marina, with beautifully decorated boats, live entertainment, festive food and drink options and a waterfront s’mores station.
While you’re there, check out the Miracle on Waterside Drive pop-up bar. Featuring over-the-top decor, holiday-inspired cocktails and the “nostalgic energy of the best office party you’ve ever been to,” Miracle on Waterside Drive is the place to imbibe this season. (Reservations recommended).
Hot Cocoa Wars

On the same day, the 10th Annual Great Hot Cocoa War returns to Downtown Norfolk, and runs for an entire week. From Nov. 23-20, this magical contest of “the hottest and chocolatiest proportions” allows hot chocolate lovers to visit several participating restaurants in Downtown Norfolk and sip on four-ounce pours of hot chocolate for $2 apiece. Voting will take place online throughout the week and the winner will be crowned on Nov. 30. Be sure to pick up a scorecard during the event to keep track of your favorite concoctions. The map will be released the night before the event begins at hotcocoawar.com.
