Activities for Small Meeting and Professional Groups

Norfolk is an ideal meeting destination for many reasons. Our convenient location in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard makes Norfolk easily accessible via plane, Interstate 64 or Amtrak. Our meeting spaces are top-of-the-line and designed with you in mind. The city’s restaurants offer elevated culinary experiences that veer far from ordinary. Finally, our close proximity to water combined with beautiful outdoor experiences make us home to a multitude of off-site activities (because we believe in a healthy combination of work and play).

The city is equipped to host meetings and conventions of all sizes, including those smaller groups that enjoy a more intimate, tailored experience. Whether you’re hosting a board retreat, VIP experience for clients or company workshop for your top performing teams, Norfolk has what it takes to elevate the experience from underwhelming to unforgettable. Here are our top picks for team building, dining and leisure activities for professional groups with less than 100 attendees.

Team Building

Get Creative

Gather your group in the spirit of creativity and give them the tools necessary to discover new talents. Norfolk is home to several activities in which groups work together or side-by-side to conceive something unexpected. As a bonus, participants get to head back home with a unique piece of Norfolk with them. The Chrysler Museum’s Perry Glass Studio offers group classes and workshops geared to the exciting world of glassmaking. No experience—only patience—is necessary to create a stunning masterpiece.

Norfolk is known as Mermaid City due to the extraordinary collection of mermaids that can be spotted throughout. Locally founded Mermaid Factory gives guests the chance to paint and decorate their very own mermaid (or shell, starfish or dolphin) using a fun assortment of paints, glitter, sand and other accessories. Projects can be taken home right away to enjoy.

Nothing brings out a creative spirit like a spirited sip. Pinot’s Palette hosts teambuilding events centered on painting and sipping, and they have private rooms available for groups. Their helpful and professional artists will guide your team each step of the way and provide all the necessary supplies: canvases, brushes, paints, palettes, aprons and more. They’ll even provide wine/beer, glasses, corkscrews, ice and buckets, plates, napkins and plasticware. Appetizers or snacks are welcome.

learn something new

Norfolk is quite a fascinating city due to its rich history, diverse culture, impressive arts scene and stunning architecture. Don’t just take our word for it though. Book an outing with Norfolk Tour Company to take a deeper dive and learn something new about our city. Your group can join a tour focused on Norfolk’s mural art, African American history, architecture or even its haunted past.

Want to learn more about Norfolk’s naval base—the largest in the world? Book a cruise for your team aboard the Victory Rover. Their two-hour narrated cruise departs daily from Nauticus to explore naval station and Port of Virginia, cruising past vessels such as destroyers, cruisers, submarines, aircraft carriers and more.

Here are more opportunities to learn something new during a tour of Norfolk.

Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

There’s nothing that will keep a team on their toes and foster collaboration more than taking part in an improv class. Norfolk’s Push Comedy Theater specializes in workshops geared to smaller groups of professionals to strengthen skills in leadership, agility and communication. Improv is an art form that energizes participants through play and teaches lessons in listening skills, mental agility and shifting to a group mindset to improve chances of team success. It may seem uncomfortable at first, but soon enough, your group will be laughing their way to new achievements.

See more creative team building opportunities here.

Dining

Irresistible Views

No better view of Norfolk’s skyline can be enjoyed than from the Elizabeth River itself. On board a City Cruises vessel, your group can be treated to a fantastic buffet, superior service and unprecedented views of Norfolk while cruising along the Elizabeth River. Music from professional DJs, dancing and a blissful breeze from the upper deck makes the experience one to remember.

International Eats

Omar’s Carriage House was originally built in the 1840s as a place to keep horses and carriages. There’s no horsing around here today though; their focus is on the finest Moroccan-inspired cuisine in the city. Omar’s private dining area seats up to 45 guests for brunches and dinners, and their outdoor tent is available to rent for up to 65 guests.

Orapax is one of our region’s premier Greek restaurants with a menu that focuses on authentic, fresh Greek cuisine combined with some Italian and American options as well. Orapax’s private dining room, The Taverna can accommodate up to 60 guests and features a full-service bar with the option of a private bartender, plus a folding glass wall system giving guests the feel of an outside dining experience. Best of all, Orapax can provide custom menus to ensure fabulous options for every member of your group.

Elevated Experiences

Known for chops, seafood and spirits, Brothers is a Downtown Norfolk restaurant offering a fine dining experience that’s vibrant, inviting and entertaining. Founded by NBA referee and Norfolk native Tony Brothers, the restaurant boasts a broad menu that will entice the most sophisticated and adventurous palate.

Whether you’re here for the superior steaks or the top-notch caviar service, Byrd & Baldwin is a Norfolk staple in fine dining that won’t steer you wrong. They source beef from premiere stockyards and feature Harris Ranch as a source of their chophouse selections. While you’re there, consider a bottle from their award-winning, extensive wine selection.

For five-star cuisine and world-class wines in a relaxed atmosphere, bring your group to Todd Jurich’s Bistro. Dining at Codex is an experience for the senses. Their brief yet impressive menu always features the season’s freshest fare prepared in the most exciting and extraordinary methods. While the food is forever rave-worthy, the bartenders sure do know their way around a cocktail. Come here for something out-of-the-ordinary, including hard-to-find beers and wines.

Did you know that Norfolk has its own winery? The appropriately named Mermaid Winery produces small batches of well-balanced wines using Virginia grapes. The vibe is sophisticated and welcoming, with menu options including multi-course meals, buffet packages and a la carte options. Beverage packages feature wine flights or wines by the glass. The winery’s dining room is ideal for hosting functions from 15–100 guests.

Tours of Norfolk

When visiting a city for the first time (or revisiting after some time has passed), it’s important to familiarize yourself with the area’s things to do, see, eat, drink and experience. Stopping by our Tourist Information Center is a great start that will allow you to chat with our friendly, welcoming staff, pick up a City Guide, ask questions about the places you want to explore and even shop our Mermaid Market for Norfolk souvenirs (and gifts for yourself too!). Another option for learning more about things to do in Norfolk is embarking on a tour. After all, what better way to experience a place than by seeing and doing as the locals do, with a local Norfolkian as your guide? There are history, architecture and haunted tours, floating excursions and even some sipping and peddling activities, all in the spirit of charting your course to experience Norfolk your way.

Walking Tours

Norfolk Tour Company

Norfolk Tour Company Founder Josh Weinstein leads a group tour through the NEON District.

What are you most interested in learning about Norfolk? Art? African American history? Architecture? Local haunts? Whatever the topic, Josh Weinstein and his knowledgeable crew of guides will have the answer. Weinstein, who has a degree in history, a background in art and knowledge of Norfolk’s cemeteries, started Norfolk Tour Company in 2018 to provide engaging, entertaining and educational experiences to both locals and visitors. The tours walk attendees through the streets of Norfolk in neighborhoods including Downtown, NEON District, Historic Freemason, Ghent, the Elizabeth River Trail and more. A perk of this company is that they often offer free tours, so check their calendar to see what’s coming up. Be advised that haunted tours fill up fast, so book your tickets early for those.

Water Tours

There’s plenty of comfortable seating, an air-conditioned deck, open-air shaded upper deck, snack bar and even a souvenir shop to commemorate your unforgettable tour.

City Cruises Norfolk

This one isn’t a tour in the traditional sense of hearing a narrator describe the various landmarks you’re passing by, but it is a neat way to take in Norfolk’s beautiful skyline from a watery vantage point. The tasty buffet, assorted cocktails and DJ entertainment certainly don’t hurt either. Cruising year-round, the Spirit of Norfolk offers lunch, brunch, dinner, cocktail, moonlit cruises and more.

Norfolk Kayak Rentals

This 90-minute tour covers nearly three miles on the water and benefits the Elizabeth River Project, aimed at restoring the environmental health of the Elizabeth River.

Norfolk is an ideal destination for group tours because our locations for large gatherings are so unique, they’ll feel personally tailored to each individual. Eco-Friendly Attractions in Norfolk

Whether you’re aiming to reduce your carbon footprint as you travel or interested in supporting eco-friendly businesses, there are many reasons to keep sustainability at the forefront these days. The City of Norfolk’s Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action Team is focused on several key initiatives to combat climate change and its impacts. These include advancing climate justice, facilitating green living and greening city operations. Wondering how you can join in the eco-friendly efforts during your time in Norfolk? As it turns out, it is easy being green—and quite fun too! Here are some recommended eco-friendly attractions in Norfolk that you can enjoy guilt-free and green-minded.

Elizabeth River Trail

The Elizabeth River Trail (also known as ERT) is Norfolk’s 10.5-mile-long walk and bikeable pathway that takes you through multiple neighborhoods with different waterfront views. It’s a great way to experience many different attractions and enjoy the outdoors in Norfolk. Efforts led by the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation aim to expand, enhance and transform the ERT as a recreational, social and educational destination that improves environmental awareness, neighborhood connectivity and innovative economic development. Initiatives such as kayak launches, solar lighting, playgrounds and improved wayfinding are just a few of the developments on the horizon for ERT.

Elizabeth River Project

The ERT is, of course, named after the Elizabeth River, the sparkling gem that makes up Norfolk’s Downtown waterfront. It wasn’t always this beautiful, however. In the 90s, decades of pollution had rendered it lifeless until community individuals, businesses, governments and schools came together to turn things around. The mission of the Elizabeth River Project is to restore the river to the highest practical level of environmental quality through government, business and community partnerships. Another Norfolk River, connected to the Elizabeth, is the Lafayette, which had suffered from runoff of lawn fertilizers, boat waste, motor oil and more. Through the efforts of their Lafayette River Restoration Plan, the Lafayette now meets state water quality standards for recreational contact, and it became the first Virginia river fully restored for the safe harvest of native oysters.

Hilton Norfolk The Main

If you’re committed to traveling green, then certainly you’ll want to book green accommodations too. Hilton Norfolk The Main, conveniently located Downtown, is a LEED-certified hotel, scoring points in categories including sustainable sites, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, regional priority credits and innovation–which received a top score.

Smartmouth Brewing Company

Smartmouth, one of Norfolk’s original breweries, gives us even more reasons to swoon: they’re Virginia Green certified. This means they strive to minimize their environmental impact by preventing pollution wherever feasible. They have committed to the Virginia Green program’s core activities, including recycling, reduction of solid waste, water efficiency, green conservation, green events and minimizing disposable food service products. We’ll drink to that.

Less Than

@golessthan, Instagram

This zero waste + refill shop in Ghent features sustainable alternatives to everyday items that are healthier for you and our planet. Look for eco-friendly products made from natural ingredients that are free from harsh, synthetic chemicals and stem from makers who are environmentally aware. Household items like soap, lotion and deodorant are sold in recycled, recyclable, compostable or biodegradable packaging—or without packaging at all. Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers and fill or refill to their heart’s desire. Products can be purchased in store or online.

Nauticus Museum

In 2018, Nauticus installed the East Coast’s first Seabin, a floating trash bin with a pump that filters trash out of the Elizabeth River. The Elizabeth River is home to one of the busiest commercial ports in the world, but it’s also home to otters, oysters and other marine life that depend on clean water to survive and thrive. In its first year of operation, the Seabin cleaned 1,000 pounds of garbage out of the river. Nauticus now owns three Seabins, and the Museum’s Junior Scientists maintain and measure progress to better understand how we can move forward in reducing waste to protect our waterways. As a River Star Model Level Business and certified Virginia Green attraction, Nauticus is committed to minimizing its environmental impacts by preventing pollution in its operations and educating the public on the importance of green practices through programs, exhibits and events. Learn more about their conservation programs and conservation efforts.

Norfolk Botanical Garden

It may seem obvious that a botanical garden would be eco-focused, but Norfolk Botanical Garden takes it a step further: they’re powered by 100 percent renewable energy! Through the Dominion Energy Green Power program, the Garden can match 100 percent of their monthly electricity usage with Renewable Energy Certificates. Other initiatives include 120 on-site solar panels that power a propagation greenhouse, plus environmental stewardship programs like composting areas, beehives and sustainability workshops for visitors.

Virginia Zoo

The Virginia Zoo is ideal for engaging in multiple conservation efforts, including a butterfly habitat and wetland and oyster restoration. The Zoo utilizes green practices on-site to build a community of environmental stewards. Some of the efforts include power conservation through sensor lights in guest areas, filtering run-off stormwater through three rain gardens throughout the Zoo, automatic flush toilets and faucets that reduce water and electrical usage, recycling (including a special bin for unwanted electronics) and installing an Eco-Garden featuring environmentally-friendly garden techniques including composting. They even have their own Green Team (a Virginia Zoo Practices and Sustainability Committee) that works to improve green practices and sustainability at the zoo. The Zoo also works with Seafood Watch, a program geared to improving sustainability of global fisheries and aquaculture. Plus, the Zoo’s Aldabra tortoise house features “living” walls and roof to educate visitors about opportunities to be green at home.

Old Dominion University

Joining forces with the Elizabeth River Project as a River Star Business, ODU has initiated many mindfully sustainable practices, including rain gardens, wetland resources, underground cisterns, building efficiencies, green roofs and extensive Earth Day celebrations. In 2021, the university installed a “floating wetland” on campus, just an example of the environmental stewardship that got them into the Business River Star Hall of Fame.

Glass Art Experiences for Group Tours

Norfolk, Virginia is growing in the world of glass art. There are many opportunities to view magnificent pieces, from working artists’ studios at d’Art Center and glass demonstrations at the Perry Glass Studio to a beautiful Tiffany glass collection at the Chrysler Museum of Art and guided tours through the NEON District. Art is limitless in Norfolk, and the glass is always half full.

Chrysler Museum of Art

Courtesy of Virginia Tourism Corporation

This art museum is home to one of the largest and most comprehensive glass collections in the world spanning over 3,000 years. One of the most notable collections is their glass art exhibit which kick-started Norfolk’s glass culture. This exhibit consists of 10,000 pieces that are undoubtedly extraordinary and range from small, single-colored vases to intricate wine goblets, flasks, ribbed bowls and mosaic cups circa the 1st century B.C!

Perry Glass Studio

The Perry Glass Studio brings the Chrysler Museum of Art’s internationally-acclaimed glass collection to life by showing how these masterpieces were created. Free glass demos are held Tuesday through Sunday at noon. The studio also offers workshops for beginners to advanced levels.

Barry Art Museum at Old Dominion University

The museum focuses on glass pieces from internationally renowned artists such as Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, Howard Ben Tré, Dan Dailey, Ginny Ruffner, Michael Glancy, Laura Donefer, Stanislav Libensky, Jaroslava Brychtova and the founder of the American studio glass movement, Harvey Littleton. Glass art has been and is currently a male-dominated field. Because of this, The Barry Art Museum takes great pride in showcasing multiple pieces of glass art designed by women.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

Built in 1739, St. Paul’s Church is Norfolk’s oldest building and the only structure to survive the British destruction of the city on New Year’s Day, 1776. Featuring a Tiffany-stained glass window, the church retains an active parish to this day. Visitors may tour the churchyard and cemetery at any time. The interior is open from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and guided tours are available upon request.

The NEON District

Norfolk’s first official arts district, the NEON District is home to a new wave of passion, creativity and unique cultural experiences all in Downtown Norfolk. Within a few short blocks, you can see a muralist at work, take in an improv comedy performance at Push Comedy Theater, watch a live glass-working demonstration, shop for the newest gear or dine out at an eclectic restaurant. The NEON district is an experience you can’t miss when visiting Norfolk.

d’Art Center

Located in the NEON District, d’ART Center is a unique attraction providing an environment where working artists are a part of an interactive community. d’Art is home to professional visual artists who display and sell original works of art on site. A resident artist, Cathy-Jo Ramsey is known for her lampwork and Kiln glasswork as well as her signature lampworked oysters. The interactive concept crosses socioeconomic lines and bridges the gap between the artist and the art, making the creative process and the visual arts come alive.

Glass Light Hotel & Gallery, Autograph Collection

Stay in Downtown Norfolk surrounded by the beauty of glass in the Glass Light Hotel & Gallery. This boutique hotel and art gallery are in a building reimagined from its 1912 heritage. On display are works of glass art by world-renowned artists such as Peter Bremers and Lino Tagliapietra. There are about 60 pieces of glass art on display, whose features pay tribute to the glass-making process. For example, tall, wooden, elongated slats are the backdrop to the welcome desk which represent the wooden tools used during the sculpting process.

Glass Light Gallery

Attached to the Glass Light Hotel is the Glass Light Gallery. The gallery is made up of 65 small and life-sized pieces of glass art. While this art is the private collection of the Perry family, new glass exhibits and artists are rotated throughout the year.

Freemason Abbey Restaurant

The building where this restaurant is housed was once a church and dates back to 1873, making it one of the oldest establishments in the city. The restaurant’s stained-glass windows are stunning works of art and are original to the building. Freemason Abbey’s historic presence combined with its decadent, comforting Southern seafood cuisine is the perfect place to enjoy local dishes!
