Group-Friendly Restaurants in Norfolk

When planning a meal that’s in the style of “the more the merrier,” it’s important to find a restaurant ahead of time that can accommodate your group needs. Thankfully, we have options! Norfolk is home to a wide variety of restaurants to fit different tastes, budgets and, yes, group sizes as well. Here are some of our suggestions for large group dining in Norfolk. Best of all, you can rest assured that an increase in quantity doesn’t mean a decrease in quality. These Norfolk restaurants have the seating and wow factor to please your party, no matter the size.

Omar’s Carriage House

@omarscarriagehouse, Instagram

Oftentimes, dinner is best served with a side of history. You’ll find just that at Omar’s Carriage House, originally built in the 1840s as a place to keep horses and carriages. In fact, guests on the first floor can look up to see a large opening where hay used to be loaded into the carriages. The food here is just as fascinating as the history with menus changing seasonally and some dishes being elevated with a Moroccan flair. Their private dining area seats up to 45 guests for brunches and dinners. Another great option is an outdoor tent that’s available to rent for up to 65 guests.

CAPO CAPO ITALIAN STEAKHOUSE

Capo Capo translated from Italian means the bosses boss, but this restaurant is about more than being top dog. The focus is on Northern Italian-inspired dishes. The semi-private restaurant space can accommodate up to 30 guests.

City Cruises Norfolk

Who needs dinner and a show when dinner is accompanied by a cruise down the Elizabeth River? In this unique floating event space with ever-changing views, your group can partake in all-inclusive packages, chef-prepared menus and full bar options. Distinctive hospitality and unbeatable views from both the climate-controlled interior and open-air outdoor decks will leave your group with an experience they can remember for a lifetime.

Town Point Club

Another option for impeccable water views is Town Point Club, overlooking the inner harbor of the busiest port on the East Coast. Conveniently located Downtown inside the World Trade Center, Town Point Club features innovative dishes crafted from local and seasonable ingredients. Work with VisitNorfolk to learn about Town Point Club’s many options for hosting unforgettable gatherings for groups of various sizes.

Waterside District

Known as the space where business meets pleasure, Waterside District is home to several unique dining options, including Blue Moon Taphouse, The Harbor Club, Rocky Mountain Grill, The Market and PBR Norfolk. Their venues are designed for guests to have the ultimate experience, with a variety of spaces to choose from whether it’s a lush beer garden, comfortable lounge spaces, waterfront views of the Elizabeth River or a front-row seat to a 25-foot LED TV. Their state-of-the-art audio-visual capabilities allow endless opportunities for showcasing logos, photos, slideshows or meeting notes.

Orapax

Orapax is one of the region’s premier Greek restaurants, having been in business for more than 50 years. Their menu focuses on authentic, fresh Greek cuisine combined with some Italian and American options as well. Orapax’s private dining room, The Taverna can accommodate up to 60 guests and features a full-service bar with the option of a private bartender, plus a folding glass wall system giving guests the feel of an outside dining experience. Best of all, Orapax can provide custom menus to ensure fabulous options for every member of your group.

Along with these locally owned options, there are several great franchise restaurants located on Norfolk’s Military Highway.

Best Ice Cream and Gelato Shops in Norfolk

There’s no better way to cool down in the hot summer months (or indulge any time of year) than by visiting some ice cream shops. You may already know that the original waffle cone was created right here in Norfolk, but did you also know you can delight in, Thai rolled ice cream and ethereal selections of gelato all within our city? Here are some of the hottest places for the coolest treats in Norfolk.

Doumar’s

Every day is ice cream day at Doumar’s where they crank out creamy shakes and ice cream sundaes in their nostalgic diner that’s been operating for more than a century. They’re most known for their handmade waffle cones, rolled right in front of your eyes on the original machine built in 1904, but you also can’t go wrong with their shortcakes, splits, sundaes and shakes, most of which come with whipped cream and a classic cherry on top.

Lolly’s Creamery

@mother1auren, Instagram

Taste the joy in every scoop of Lolly’s ice cream. Originally churned in Virginia Beach, Lolly’s made their way to Norfolk, bringing with them a creamy craving we can’t deny. The Lolly’s brand encompasses three things: joy, community and generosity. Try their classic flavors like strawberry, real deal vanilla and mint chocolate chip, and also be on the lookout for their monthly rotating flavors and weekly releases.

On Ice

@on_ice2, Instagram

If you thought all ice cream was created equally, think again. At On Ice, located near Naval Station Norfolk, the made-from-scratch batches are created in a unique, nitrogen-based method, transforming a simple ice cream shop visit into a fascinating show and learning experience. Choose from sundae flavors like Chocolate Explosion or Strawberry Cream Pie, or make your own by combining ice cream flavors with fun toppings. Enjoy them traditionally, or opt for the N₂.I.C.E.D. version in which ingredients are whipped into a sphere and flash frozen for an airy, crunchy texture.

S’Mores Amore

S’mores have been a Downtown staple ever since Owner Duane Dinio first invited customers to “get fired up” at his Selden Market shop. Picture a perfect square of graham cracker crust, layered with a brownie or blondie and topped with a marshmallow toasted to perfection right before your eyes. If that wasn’t heavenly enough, S’mores Amore added an ice cream menu that melds handmade ice cream with chunks of S’mores Amore brownie or blondie pieces for a cool way to enjoy the ultimate s’mores experience.

Strawberry Fields

If strawberry fields are forever, that’s how long we’ll be obsessed with this gem of a gelato shop in Norfolk’s Ghent neighborhood. Each day, their gelato is made from scratch with new flavors consistently posted on their social media. From ooey gooey cake to brown butter pecan, there’s surely a flavor to suit your fancy. Check out this City with Bite episode on Strawberry Fields to learn more

Urban Ice

You’ve had ice cream in a bowl, cone, blender, cake and sandwich, but have you had it rolled? Thai rolled ice cream is created by pouring liquid ice cream ingredients onto a below-freezing surface, spreading it out, cutting into strips, rolling them up and topping with all sorts of sweet creations. At Urban Ice, you can create your own combination or go with a favorite like Cookie Monster or Mango Tango.

Norfolk Juneteenth Events

When Juneteenth became officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, it marked a pivotal moment in African American and American history. Although Juneteenth (June 19) is the longest-running African American holiday, its national observance sparked a new opportunity for education, celebration and dialogue.

History of Juneteenth

Known as African American Independence Day, Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation proclaimed the freedom of more than 3.5 million enslaved African Americans on Jan. 1, 1863, it took over two years for word to spread to all enslaved people. In fact, some enslavers deliberately withheld news about freedom to maintain labor on the plantation, waiting until harvest season was over. This was the case for many slave owners in Texas–a state that hadn’t experienced a significant presence of Union troops and was considered a safe haven for slavery.

On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to spread the news, take control and ensure that the remaining 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were freed. The following year, Texas freedmen started the first “Jubilee Day” celebration on June 19. The tradition has continued, influencing commemorations that include music, food and religious services and, more recently, festivals, rallies, memorials and parades.

“Black Lives More Than Matter,” a mural in Norfolk’s NEON District painted by local artists Nicole Harp and Clayton Singleton

Juneteenth Your Way: Self-Guided Explorations and Activities

With any holiday, individuals, families and communities commemorate in ways that feel special to them. Here are some additional ideas to begin your own Juneteenth traditions.

TAKE A SELF-GUIDED TOUR OF WATERWAYS TO FREEDOM

With its complex and interwoven waterways, Virginia provided a starting point for thousands of individuals to escape slavery. Fugitive slaves would depart on wharves, steamships and schooners and be assisted by safe houses (especially churches and neighborhoods) on their journey to northern states and Canada. Take a self-guided tour of Underground Railroad Sites in Norfolk and Portsmouth and learn the history of the people and places that made it possible to escape–and the many dangerous obstacles that stood in the way.

VISIT WEST POINT MONUMENT AT WEST POINT CEMETERY

West Point Monument was dedicated as a special place of burial for African American Union Civil War and Spanish American War veterans. It is one of only a few African American Civil War Memorials located in the South. The Civil War soldier depicted on the monument is Norfolk native Sergeant William H. Carney of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. Carney was the first black soldier to receive the Medal of Honor for his bravery. Nearly 100 African American veterans are laid to rest in the West Point Cemetery. West Point Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and is now commemorated with a historical highway marker along Princess Anne Road.

SUPPORT A LOCAL BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS

The city of Norfolk would not be the creative, diverse and vibrant community that it is without the endless contributions made by African American residents and business owners. From scrumptious soul food to self-care sanctuaries, we celebrate these businesses within our city and encourage you to visit their establishments as you celebrate Juneteenth–but especially all year long.

Wands has previously provided books to The Velvet Witch, M&G, Packed House and Quixotic Arts. How to Celebrate National Bike Month in Norfolk

May is National Bike Month, a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more individuals to give biking a try. Not only is biking a great form of exercise and fun way to explore the great outdoors; it’s also an environmentally friendly way to get around town. The City of Norfolk has taken great strides in recent years to evolve into a bike-friendly city. With nearly 60 miles of dedicated bike lanes and shared lane markings, Norfolk has many options for bringing more power to the pedal.

2024 marks the 13th Annual Norfolk Bike Month, and the city will celebrate with 31 days of rides and plenty of opportunities to get the wheels rolling. This city-wide community celebration is sponsored by Lime and organized by the City of Norfolk, Downtown Norfolk Council, Hampton Roads Transit, TRAFFIX, the Elizabeth River Trail and others. Whether you’re riding for fun, fitness or with family, biking means taking part in a movement for safer streets, connected communities, a healthier planet and happier people. No matter if you’re a local or visiting Norfolk during the month of May, we encourage you to park the car, grab a helmet and navigate on two wheels during National Bike Month and beyond.

Where to Bike

Bike Lanes

@h8pavmt, Instagram

Norfolk currently has 35.8 miles of bike lanes, 31.8 miles of sharrows (lanes dedicated for vehicles and bikers to share) and 11.1 miles of off-road shared use paths. Elizabeth River Trail

This 10.5-mile urban biking and pedestrian trail is an enjoyable way to explore Norfolk on two wheels. The trail journeys steadily along the Elizabeth River connecting the neighborhoods of Downtown, Freemason, Chelsea, Ghent, Larchmont and Lochhaven. Along the way, you’ll encounter many attractions and restaurants worth taking a break for.

Norfolk Botanical Garden

Pedal through the petals during Norfolk Botanical Garden’s bike nights held April 1–Oct. 15 from 4–7 p.m. With 175 acres and 14 miles of paved and unpaved paths, the garden is a safe and scenic option for getting exercise while immersing yourself in a lush world of botanical beauty.

Northside Park

@NorfolkVA, Twitter

Norfolk may not have been on your radar for places to mountain bike, but perhaps it should be. Northside Park is a 62-acre public park featuring a skate park, tennis courts and ball fields. In recent years, volunteers from a volunteer organization Bike Norfolk have worked to develop access to mountain biking trails within the park, resulting in three separate but connecting trails for a total of 2.2 miles of single track.

Creative Teambuilding Activities in Norfolk

When bringing colleagues together, there’s no better way to spark collaboration than by planning some creative teambuilding activities. After a day of back-to-back breakout sessions, your team will be ready to break out of a conference room and into a fun and relaxing environment. Take advantage of Norfolk’s vibrant arts scene by booking a teambuilding experience at one of these creative options. As a bonus, most activities involve team members bringing a unique, handmade piece of Norfolk back home with them.

Glassmaking at Perry Glass Studio at Chrysler Museum of Art

The Perry Glass Studio is a modern, 7,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the Chrysler Museum of Art that is fully equipped to accommodate aspiring and master artists alike. Group classes and workshops are available for teams to enjoy the excitement of glassmaking. With no experience needed, your group can learn together while creating colorful objects that are as unique as your team. Some classes require several days for objects to cool, so consider booking a glassmaking experience on the first day of your conference or meeting to allow enough time to cool. Objects can also be shipped.

Cooking Classes at Syd’s Fish Pig Cafe

Learn from one of Norfolk’s best chefs, Syd Meers, whose Fish Pig Cafe was recently named one of the South’s best restaurants by Southern Living magazine. Tucked away in Selden Market in Downtown Norfolk, Syd’s is located on the same block at the Norfolk Hilton The Main and across the street from the Sheraton.

Painting and Sipping at Pinot’s Palette

At Pinot’s Palette, located in Ghent, they see a strong correlation between employee retention and the quality of team relationships. Their teambuilding events are centered on two fun and easygoing pastimes—painting and sipping. Group painting has a benefit of encouraging team members’ minds to work in new ways and jumpstart creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Their helpful and professional artists will guide your team each step of the way and provide all the necessary supplies: canvases, brushes, paints, palettes, aprons and more. They’ll even provide wine/beer, glasses, corkscrews, ice and buckets, plates, napkins and plasticware. Appetizers or snacks are welcome.

Mermaid Painting at Mermaid Factory

There’s no better creative Mermaid City experience than sending every employee home with a Norfolk mermaid they’ve painted themselves. Once your group arrives, each team member can choose the item they’d like to paint. Mermaids, shells, starfish and dolphins are all available, but mermaids will be the best reminder of their time in Norfolk. Then they’ll get to work using paint, glitter, sand and glue to make their items unique and special. Projects can be taken home right away to enjoy.

Improv Classes with Push Comedy Theater

Need to break out of the same old ice breakers? Also located in Norfolk’s NEON District, the Push Comedy Theater hosts live improv classes that encourage creativity and team morale while using laughter as a key factor. Will your team be nervous about joining an improv class? Probably. Will they strengthen skills in leadership, agility and communication? Absolutely. Improv is an art form that energizes participants through play and teaches lessons in listening skills, mental agility and shifting to a group mindset to improve chances of team success. Workshops are typically three hours but can be customized to meet the needs and objectives of your group. Workshops can be presented at Push Comedy Theater or at your designated location.

Touring Norfolk’s Arts District with Norfolk Tour Company

On journeys to and from hotel rooms, conference rooms and restaurants, your team will likely notice Norfolk’s vivid arts district. The NEON District is a unique cultural experience energized with colorful murals throughout. Some are by local artists, some are national, and all come with a story. Want to hear some of those stories? Just ask Joshua Weinstein, founder of Norfolk Tour Company. A lifelong resident of the region and lover of local history and art, Weinstein will weave your team through alleyways, along sidewalks and in front of some of the most intriguing murals in the NEON District. If art isn’t in your team’s wheelhouse, other tours explore Norfolk’s Elizabeth River Trail, urban architectural designs, historic districts, cemeteries and even haunted attractions.

Woodworking at Board & Brush

This DIY wood sign workshop in Ghent provides education on woodworking techniques combined with the latest trends and custom graphics. In these workshops, teams can socialize, collaborate and have fun all while creating a unique piece of art they can display in their homes or offices. Staff provides hands-on instruction, materials, music and an enjoyable atmosphere. They’ll even help you partner with a local restaurant for catering, or you can go potluck! Complimentary wine and beer are included. Planners will be provided with a private event link to share with the whole team. Don’t want to leave out virtual employees? Board & Brush ships their kits nationally.

Painting Pottery at Color Me Mine

Here’s another option for the first day of your convention. Color Me Mine is a paint-your-own pottery studio in which team members can choose from a wide variety of pre-made pottery including plates, travel mugs, planters and more. Employees make the items their own using a variety of paints and techniques. Then the team at Color Me Mine will glaze and fire creations to be picked up in just a couple days.
