Lone Sailor Statue

113 Waterside Dr, Norfolk, VA 23510

The Lone Sailor© statue represents the past, present and future Navy bluejacket – adventurous, independent, courageous, self-reliant, and resourceful. His authentic image evokes the lure and romance of service at sea. The dedication of The Lone Sailor© statue occurred on May 25, 2002. The statue is on Wisconsin Square facing the bridge of the Battleship USS Wisconsin. Because Norfolk is the home of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, it serves as a natural home for The Lone Sailor©. The Norfolk statue is surrounded by eight bronze commemorative plaques of Norfolk-based ships and submarines that have met with tragedy – and one plaque that recalls the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon. The plaques are: USS Cole, USS Forrestal, USS Iowa, USS Liberty, USS Nimitz, USS Newport News, USS Scorpion, and The Pentagon. The Norfolk Lone Sailor©, and its moving site were donated by “Friends of the United States Navy Memorial” – made up of hundreds of individuals and local organizations that pledged their support.

West Point Monument at West Point Cemetery

238 Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, VA 23510 (757) 441-2576

The West Point Monument is in West Point Cemetery and can be accessed through Elmwood Cemetery. West Point Monument was dedicated as a special place of burial for African-American Union Civil War and Spanish American War veterans. It is one of only a few African-American Civil War Memorials located in the South. The cornerstone of the monument was set on Decoration Day, May 30, 1909, and was completed in 1920. The Civil War soldier depicted on the monument is Norfolk native Sergeant William H. Carney of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. Carney was the first black soldier to receive the Medal of Honor for his bravery. Nearly 100 African American veterans are laid to rest in the West Point Cemetery. West Point Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and is now commemorated with a historical highway marker along Princess Anne Road.

The Attucks Theatre

1010 Church Street, Norfolk, VA 23510 (757) 664-6464

A state and national landmark, the Attucks Theatre is distinguished as the oldest remaining legitimate theatre in the nation that was completely financed, designed, constructed and operated by African Americans. In its heyday, the theatre was the focal point of entertainment, business, and racial pride in Norfolk’s African-American community. Built in 1919, the name of the theatre, “Attucks,” commemorates Crispus Attucks, an African-American man who was the first American patriot to lose his life in the Boston Massacre of 1770. In the present day, the Attucks Theatre is a star on the Norfolk cultural stage, with an eclectic lineup each season, including musical performances, plays, dramatic readings, etc. The Attucks Theatre, located just minutes from downtown, has a well-deserved reputation for combining elegance and first-class service.
