Being On The Water

Free Music on the Elizabeth River Ferry

July 6 2024

4:30-5:30 p.m.
Waterside District Norfolk VA

The Elizabeth River Ferry is hosting a floating saxophone performance on Saturday, July 6, as a musical link between two back-to-back events in both Portsmouth and Norfolk.

Saxophonist K Russ will perform acoustic rhythm and blues for one hour starting with the 4:30 p.m. departure from Portsmouth’s High Street ferry dock, sponsored by the Downtown Norfolk Council (DNC). The first 50 people to board the ferry for the ride to Waterside in Norfolk will receive a free day pass for unlimited rides on Hampton Roads Transit, including the ferry, Tide light rail and buses, also courtesy of the DNC.

Enjoy live music as you hop across the river and back for a night of music, food and shopping. The performance bridges two events in both cities:

In Olde Towne Portsmouth, the annual High Street Festival is a one-day community celebration of creative commerce featuring storefront activations, artistic displays, vendors, a kids’ area, food and entertainment. The event is free. The festival is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. along High Street from Dinwiddie Street to Effingham Street, just four blocks from the High Street ferry landing. Details are at https://highstreetfestival.com.

Then, take the ferry to the RnB Block Party, featuring DJ DRAMA and guest DJs playing R&B music, at Norfolk Scope Plaza from 6 p.m. to midnight. The event is for adults 21 and over. For details and ticket information, visit https://thernbblockparty.com.

To get to the Scope from Waterside, R&B fans can walk or take the light rail from MacArthur Station for one stop to Monticello Station. Free parking is available at the EVMC/Fort Norfolk, Ballentine/Broad Creek, Military Highway and Newtown Road light rail stations in Norfolk.

The ferry operates every 30 minutes between Portsmouth and Norfolk between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., then every 15 minutes until 8 p.m. Ferry service continues every 30 minutes until 11:30 p.m.
