Lights Out for Safe Skies: Help Birds Navigate Hampton Roads
Help our feathered friends navigate safely through Hampton Roads during spring and fall migrations with the ‘Lights Out’ program. The Cape Henry Audubon Society, along with the Virginia Zoo, Friends of Indian River, and other community partners, are making our city a haven for birds. From March 15 to May 31, and again from August 15 to November 15, businesses, offices, and even homes can help by turning off unnecessary lights from 11pm to 6am. This small step can dramatically reduce bird deaths caused by collisions with lit windows. Dimming interior lights, using motion sensors outdoors, and drawing curtains are all easy ways to make a big difference. Studies show turning off lights can save up to 80% of migrating birds! Visit birdsafehr.org to learn more and sign up – every light turned off helps keep our skies safe for these incredible travelers.
